As the season draws to an end its inevitable that Rangers will be rumoured to be interested in a whole host of players and centre halves are going to figure high on anyone's guess list especially after Clint Hill being released.
The easy option is to pick a player who Pedro Caixinha has worked with before and who's contract is up. Its surely a value bet to pick someone who fills that criteria and fill a back page without too much investigation.
Anyone who can access Google could find a few reasons why this signing target should be on the improbable list instead of a back page lead story. It's lazy journalism.
Rashid is a Ghanaian internationalist but the last of his six caps came in May 2014 and he's been an unused sub for four games since. The last time he was in a squad was June 2014. Regulations state that non EU players must have played 75% of their countries international games in the last two years to qualify for a visa. These rules are set by the home office and can only be appealed for a player who is "able to contribute significantly to the development of the game at the top level in the U.K."
In short, a 24 year old who hasn't played an international game for three years and is currently plying his trade in the Middle East is unlikely to gain a visa to play here but don't that let you stop printing it as a lead story in the Scottish press.
As the season winds down and the papers require to fill inches with stories about Rangers, please use some sort of common sense and logic before grabbing on to the latest offerings of the tabloids. I have witnessed some fans waxing lyrically on social media about a player they know nothing about will be exactly what we need to strengthen our team. The fact your grannies neighbours cousin is a taxi driver/works at the paper/is in the know really isn't relevant when the facts show he's unlikely to be able to sign for Rangers even if our manager fancies him.
You've got to love the summer and the transfer rumour mill that throws up ten suggestions for every position we need to strengthen and half of them simply can't sign when you consider their international history or the expected wage demands of the latest imminent superstar signing.
Rangers will sign between 8 and 11 players this summer but there will be at least 20-30 names attached to our club before the transfer window shuts next season. The next time you hear "aye but a guy that works with my brothers girlfriends cousin is never wrong" just ignore it as no one is ever right every time with transfers as even the ones who do have an insight can get left embarrassed as deals can fall for any number of reasons and leave the guy who's been bumming "my sister cuts a Directors hair" with a bit of egg on his face as he's spent two weeks telling everybody we are about to sign Ernest Rumbello the Honduran Messi and he ends up signing for Perugia on loan.
