Scottish FA Cleared Rangers Takeover Process, Says Maxwell

Scottish FA CEO Ian Maxwell has confirmed that the governing body found no issues with Rangers’ recent takeover, officially clearing the US-led consortium’s proposed acquisition.

Maxwell stated the SFA conducted comprehensive due diligence on the takeover, which involved investors including Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe of the San Francisco 49ers. He confirmed that regulatory and ownership criteria were thoroughly examined and passed.

He emphasised that the decision followed a rigorous review process aligned with SFA protocols, requiring all potential owners to meet strict standards related to financial transparency, integrity, and football governance. Rangers’ application successfully met each criterion without reservation.

Maxwell also addressed broader ownership rules, reminding clubs that any future change in structure or significant shareholding must go through the same procedural scrutiny to ensure fair competition and regulatory compliance across Scottish football.

With the green light now issued, the new ownership group can finalise its plans — including investment in the squad, stadium upgrades, and long-term strategy. Rangers fans should expect official confirmation in the coming days once deal formalities are completed.
